Last year we had 71 families take part in our 16-week Community Shared Agriculture program. One share cost $240 and a family share(double) cost $470. Members paid at the beginning of the year, and then from July to October came to the farm each week to pick up their share of available vegetables. A weekly newsletter was sent out to let everyone know what was in their bag and what to do with it. We tried to vary the content of the bags as much as possible and customized slightly according to member preferences. At the end of the season, members filled out a survey to help us prepare for 2009.
Throughout the season over 30 different veggies appeared in the bags! Early on, it was lots of different greens with radishes and peas, followed by roots like carrots and beets, and then later season crops like tomatoes, squash, and beans.
Some extra features that we added in for 2009 were: greens shares ($30), for those who wanted extra greens every week; assisted shares, which gave our members a chance to donate extra money towards shares for low income families; and an 'extras' box for those picking up to take any extra veggies we had or leave any unwanted veggies for others who might want them.
After a very successful third year, we crunched numbers, ploughed fields, and reviewed surveys until we came up with what we were going to offer in 2010.
We are so happy and excited to be offering this program again, in what we hope to be a bigger and better way.
What's happening this year?
This year we are offering the same extra features as last year, but the whole program will be extended by two weeks. It will now be 18 weeks, extending from the end of June to the end of October.
Members come out to the farm on one of two pick up days(Monday or Thursday) to get their veggies. Each member has two bags. When they pick up the one full of produce, they drop off the empty one from the previous week.
We offer delivery for anyone living from St. Andrew's to Ghost Rd. for $3/wk or $40/season(16 weeks). Delivery outside of Ghost Rd is a possibility that we are happy to discuss with those interested.
There will be opportunities to attend farm events, either to celebrate with a potluck or to help out with the harvest!
